Documents shouldn't need a law degree to understand
Why we built Explain This, what it is, and — just as importantly — what it isn't.
Why we built this
Contracts, quotes, policies and letters are often written in dense, technical language that's hard to fully parse without training — yet decisions worth real money, and real consequences, hinge on them. Explain This reads a document and gives you a clear, plain-English explanation of what it says, what matters, and what you might need to do next, so you can go into a conversation with a landlord, employer, insurer or professional already understanding the basics.
What we are — and aren't
We're a plain-English explanation tool — not a law firm, financial advisory, medical practice or government body, and we don't provide legal, medical, financial or other professional advice. Nothing on this site replaces a conversation with a qualified, licensed professional who can look at your full situation. Where it matters, we try to help you prepare better questions to ask one. See our Terms of Service for the full detail.
How we work
Upload or paste a document, and we identify what kind of document it is, then work through it to find what matters — dates, amounts, obligations and risks — before giving you a structured, plain-English explanation and a chance to ask a follow-up question. See the full walkthrough on our How it works page.
Where we're based
Explain This is based in Australia, and used by people across English-speaking countries around the world.
